The long-running anime series "Yamishibai" will continue in January 2026 with a new season. The main motif and comprehensive production details for the sixteenth season, officially called "Yamishibai 16", have now been released.

The series is known for telling urban legends and eerie stories around a specific central motif in each season. After the fifteenth season was dedicated to the theme "Zan" (approximately: "to remain behind" or "remnant"), the focus of the new episodes is on the character "Musubi" (結), which can mean, among other things, "knot", "connection", or "conclusion". The exact stories derived from this theme are not yet known.

As in previous seasons, key voice actors return in their familiar roles. Kanji Tsuda once again voices the mysterious "Kamishibai-Oji-san" (Paper Theater Uncle), who presents the stories – a role he has portrayed continuously since the first season. Ryo Hirano as "Taro-chan" and Yuta Hoshino as "Ohara" are also part of the cast again. New to the series is, among others, the artist Yō Koizumi.

Behind the scenes, an experienced team is at work, most of whom have been responsible for the series for many seasons. The direction continues to be led by Akira Funata, while the scripts come from the long-time writers Hirotake Kumamoto, Mitsuhiro Sasaki, and Kanako Ishikami. The distinctive visual design in the "Kamishibai" style (digital paper theater) is contributed by a team including Kazuma Takeya and Yasuo Yamakawa from TV Tokyo.

The band yosugala has been secured for the musical conclusion of each episode. Their new song "Masquerade Night" will be heard as the ending theme of the season.

"Yamishibai" started in July 2013 as a short horror anime that found its own fanbase with its retro style and creepy everyday stories. The sixteenth season can be seen on TV Tokyo from January 11, 2026.
