This year, the Frankfurt Book Fair will award the Sondermann Prize for web publications in the comic and manga category for the first time. Now, numerous comic and manga fans can also submit their stories.
Every year, the "Sondermann"—the most important audience award for comics in Germany—is presented at the Frankfurt Book Fair. For the first time, webcomics will also be nominated. To this end, the "Web-Sondermann" was created specifically. Fans of this literary genre are invited to vote for their favorite comics and mangas of 2010.
Only comics or mangas published on the internet will be nominated. Any artist who regularly publishes their stories online may participate in the competition.
For several years now, online publications have been gaining significance—including in the comic and manga genre. The organizers of the Frankfurt Book Fair and the sponsors of the "Sondermann Prize" wanted to respond to this trend.
However, changes were not limited to the web version of the Sondermann Prize. The categories "Comic International" and "Comic Self-Publication (national)," as well as "Manga International" and "Manga Self-Publication (national)," will no longer be separate categories but will instead be merged into one. Starting in fall 2010, there will only be the two categories "Comic" and "Manga," in which the two most successful international and national publications will be nominated and put up for a vote.
The Hall of Fame will also be new. Only award winners who have been honored three or more times will be inducted. So far, only three artists have achieved this. Starting in October, they will be inducted into the Hall of Fame. One of them is the renowned illustrator Eiichiro Oda, for his work on One Piece.
