The «Sword Art Online» franchise announces its next major theatrical release: The completely new original film is titled «Gekijōban Sword Art Online – Integral Domain –» and is scheduled to hit Japanese cinemas in 2028. Producer Aniplex made the announcement on July 7, 2026, simultaneously releasing a first teaser visual and a short preview.
Directed by Shingo Adachi, who has been involved as character designer and overall director of the «SAO» series since the first anime season and made his acclaimed TV directorial debut with «Lycoris Recoil», the film's character design is handled by Yumiko Yamamoto, who previously worked on the «Progressive» films. The story concept comes from series creator Reki Kawahara, who is crafting a completely new storyline set after the events of the «Alicization» arc.
The focus once again is on the two main characters Kirito (voiced by Yoshitsugu Matsuoka) and Asuna (Haruka Tomatsu), who are also featured in the teaser image drawn by Yamamoto. The animation is produced by A-1 Pictures in collaboration with their internal label Psyde Kick Studio. Distribution in Japan will be handled by ANIMEC.
«Integral Domain» is the first completely standalone film in the series since «Ordinal Scale» (2017). The previously released «Progressive» films, on the other hand, adapted the light novel series of the same name. The project was first announced in November 2022 during the anime's tenth anniversary; a concrete title was not available until this reveal.
The «Sword Art Online» light novel series by Reki Kawahara has been published since 2009 by Dengeki Bunko and has sold over 30 million copies worldwide. The anime started in 2012 and so far includes three TV seasons, several spin-offs, and the two «Progressive» films. An international theatrical release for «Integral Domain» has not yet been determined.
