After the confirmed death of 2B and the severe fall of 9S, the former Pod of 2B begins to restore and play back the memories of A2, starting with her first mission on Earth. It was one of sixteen new, advanced YoRHa models. An attack with ML ground lasers leaves only eight survivors, of whom only four can move on their own. With their leader, Number 1, dead, Number 2 unexpectedly takes command.

Although Number 2 insists on carrying the wounded, her plan is thwarted by an attack from a 128,000-strong ML army. They are rescued by the resistance group led by Rose, which also includes Lily. Number 2 persuades Rose to assist her in a covert mission to infiltrate and destroy an ML server.

During their collaboration, Number 2 and her team develop a close bond with the resistance. During this time, Lily becomes infected with a virus, and Rose considers killing her. Number 2 prevents this, and they manage to save Lily and eliminate the virus. The mission continues, and the ties between the two groups grow stronger.

Unfortunately, their camaraderie is put to a harsh test. Upon reaching the server, the ML mock them with desecrated android bodies and reveal that YoRHa and humanity orchestrated the horrific events to gather data for future models, which would ultimately lead to 2B.

During the destruction of the server, Rose and Number 4 sacrifice themselves, leaving Number 2 alone. Her memories show that the purpose of her life was to protect the family she deeply loved.

Now that her family is gone, Number 2 wakes up in a bed in Pascal’s village. She must find a new purpose in life, though she would have preferred to keep sleeping—if androids could dream.
