The popular game series Touken Ranbu ONLINE is receiving an extraordinary stage adaptation: Noh Kyogen Touken Ranbu combines the centuries-old traditions of Nō and Kyōgen with the fantastical world of sword warriors. For the first production, Yochigumo-hen, specially commissioned illustrations by three of Japan's most significant manga artists have been released. Moto Hagio, Ryoko Yamagishi, and Waki Yamato have reinterpreted the sword warriors in their distinctive styles.

The story revolves around the sword warriors Higekiri and Hizamaru, two mythical blades that are among the most popular characters in the game. Moto Hagio, creator of works such as The Poe Family and The Heart of Thomas, depicted the two brother blades in a delicate yet dignified aesthetic. Waki Yamato, known for Haikara-san ga Tōru and Asaki Yumemishi, portrayed Kogitsunemaru with noble colors and patterns reminiscent of Nō costumes. Ryoko Yamagishi, author of Hi Izuru Tokoro no Tenshi, contributed an image of a mysterious sword warrior whose identity and role in the story have not yet been revealed.

Behind this reinterpretation is a top-tier creative team. The verses come from Bunzo Otsuki, a living national treasure in Nō theater (Kanze school). The artistic direction was overseen by renowned Kyōgen performer Mansai Nomura, with staging by Wakagi Efu and musical composition by Hirotada Kamei. On stage, Yuichi Otsuki portrays Hizamaru and Yuki Nomura portrays Higekiri, accompanied by Kazuyuki Fukuō and Bunzo Otsuki.

The premiere of Yochigumo-hen will take place on July 28 and 29, 2026, at the National Nō Theater (Tokyo). Further performances there follow from August 24 to 26, before the production visits the Kongō-Nō Theater in Kyoto on September 11 and 12. The play is explicitly presented as a collaboration with the manga adaptation Touken Ranbu Gaiden Ayakashitan by Yaeko Ninagawa.

Touken Ranbu ONLINE, a sword training simulation that launched for PC browsers in 2015 and as a smartphone app in 2016, has over 15 million users worldwide. For years, the franchise has been expanded through musicals, spoken theater, anime, and Kabuki—the Nō-Kyōgen adaptation now marks the next step in this multimedia success story.

The three participating artists are not only icons of 1970s shōjo manga but will also be the subject of a major exhibition. From October 28, 2026, to February 8, 2027, the National Art Center Tokyo will present the retrospective Shōjo Manga Infinity: Moto Hagio, Ryoko Yamagishi, and Waki Yamato. Featuring original drawings and rare archives, it will trace the development of these pioneering artists—the very creative force that now enriches the world of Touken Ranbu.
