The episode sheds light on Kuma's tragic past: Born as a slave of the Buccaneer ethnic group, he is kidnapped as a child by the World Government after his parents – also slaves – are executed. His mother dies, while his father motivates him with the legend of Nika, the "Warrior of Liberation," to survive despite the suffering.

Decades later, during the notorious God Valley Incident, Kuma witnesses the cruel "human hunting" of the World Nobles, led by St. Garling, a "Holy Knight." Here, he meets Ivankov and Ginny (later members of the Revolutionary Army), who devise a risky escape plan. Meanwhile, St. Saturn reveals on Egghead that he once ordered Kuma to sacrifice his free will to serve as a weapon of the government.
