During the cruel "human hunt" of the World Nobles on God Valley, Kuma, Ivankov, and Ginny devise a plan to free slaves. They steal two Devil Fruits: the Paw-Paw Fruit (Nikyu Nikyu no Mi) and the Azure-Dragon Fruit (Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu). Kuma eats the Paw-Paw Fruit and uses its power to teleport hundreds of slaves – including children – off the island.

The island becomes a battlefield as the Rocks Pirates (under Xebec) and the Roger Pirates arrive to plunder the treasures of the World Nobles. The Marines and the Holy Knights (including St. Garling) try in vain to maintain order.

After the rescue, Kuma and Ginny establish a temporary community of freed slaves. Kuma's ability to release pain and exhaustion as "bubbles" makes him a symbol of hope – a direct reference to the legend of Nika, the "Warrior of Liberation." Ginny emphasizes: "Your hands are hands of liberation!", foreshadowing Kuma's later role as a peaceful revolutionary.

In the present, St. Saturn confronts Bonney with Kuma's fate: he forced him to sacrifice his free will to serve as a Pacifista. Saturn uses psychological torture to break Bonney's resistance, while the Straw Hat crew fights against the Marines.
