The popular manga series "Oneechan no Midori-kun" by Amu Meguro is getting a live-action adaptation. As announced on May 31, 2026, Hashimoto Masaki, a member of the Japanese idol group timelesz, will play the lead role of Midori Yukishiro. The female lead role of Sui Sanae will be played by Runa Nakajima, who was recently awarded the Newcomer Prize at the Japan Academy for her role in "Tokyo Taxi."

The manga, which has been serialized in "Bessatsu Margaret" magazine (Shueisha) since 2022, has achieved a total circulation of over 1.5 million copies in Japan, including digital versions. The story revolves around high school student Sui, who falls in love with her older sister's boyfriend, the seven-year-older Midori – even though she initially can't stand him because he always treats her like a child. Through tutoring sessions for her entrance exams, they grow closer, and Sui discovers his unexpected tenderness.

The film is directed by Mahito Kimura, who has already made a name for himself as a sensitive director of love stories with the WOWOW dramas "Ao Haru Ride" and "Strobe Edge." The screenplay is written by Nami Yoshikawa, who was previously responsible for films such as "Honey Lemon Soda" and "Kōkando Uso Nikki." Production and distribution are handled by Studio Shochiku.

Along with the announcement, a teaser visual was released showing Midori playfully touching Sui's chin with a pen. The motif symbolizes the dreamy but unattainable closeness of the two characters. Additionally, first comments from those involved were released. Author Amu Meguro expressed her delight at the adaptation and praised the casting: "Hashimoto-san looks as if he stepped right out of a shōjo manga, and Nakajima-san radiates such fragile transparency – she is exactly Sui."

Hashimoto, who is taking on his first-ever lead film role, promises: "I want to devote myself wholeheartedly to the role of Midori, whom the fans cherish so much. With director Kimura and my partner Nakajima, I have agreed to carefully craft every tiny emotion, every gesture, and every expression." Nakajima, in turn, emphasizes: "I want to empathetically embody Sui's lovable, slightly grumpy nature and preserve the fragile atmosphere of the story."

The film "Oneechan no Midori-kun" will be released nationwide in Japanese theaters on December 4, 2026.
