The second episode of Oooku begins with the introduction of three monks: Myokei, Gyokuei, and Arikoto, the young, handsome abbot of Keiko-in. Despite his age, Arikoto possesses a higher degree of spiritual wisdom and leadership than his peers, evident in his devotion to helping the needy and praying for the deceased. In contrast to Myokei and Gyokuei, who are more preoccupied with worldly matters, Arikoto remains firmly focused on his spiritual duties in Kyoto and even declines an extended stay in Edo.

The plot takes a dark turn when Kasuga, Iemitsu's wet nurse, who is enchanted by Arikoto's beauty, insists on a private meeting with the monks. She offers them a considerable amount of gold, hinting at ulterior motives. The situation worsens when the monks are confined to their rooms under the pretext of an outbreak of red face pox. Myokei correctly suspects that the shogun is interested in bringing Arikoto into his inner chambers. What he doesn't know, however, is that Iemitsu has died of red face pox.

Kasuga, who wields significant influence in the palace, demands that Arikoto join the Oooku, which he firmly refuses. Tensions escalate when Kasuga summons prostitutes to the monks' quarters and threatens not to release them unless Arikoto breaks his vow and sleeps with one. Arikoto stands by his principles, showing respect and compassion for the women's plight but refusing to abandon his beliefs.

The situation reaches a critical point when Kasuga orders the execution of a prostitute and Myokei to force Arikoto into submission. The loss of innocent lives due to political machinations starkly highlights the power dynamics within the palace. Arikoto finds himself in a dire predicament, and his efforts to alleviate suffering are undermined by the violent events unfolding around him.
