At this year's Cannes Film Festival, the Japanese production company K2 Pictures unveiled an ambitious project: the adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's manga "The Book of Human Insects" (Japanese: "Ningen Konchūki") as a live-action film in the form of a dark musical. The film is part of the Tezuka 100th Anniversary Project and will be directed by Ken Ninomiya, who previously gained attention with films such as "Chiwawa" and "The Midnight Maiden War."

The announcement was made during a press conference by K2 Pictures in Cannes, where the company also announced the closing of its K2P Film Fund I – a fund that has raised approximately 5 billion yen (about 33 million US dollars), with investments from, among others, Mitsubishi UFJ Bank and the Development Bank of Japan. The fund is intended to open new financing avenues for Japanese filmmakers and strengthen international marketing.

"The Book of Human Insects" was originally serialized from 1970 to 1971 in the magazine Play Comic by publisher Akita Shoten and is considered one of the most unconventional works by the "Manga God." The story follows the talented and ruthless Toshiko Tomura, a young woman who systematically imitates and appropriates the abilities of others to succeed in literature, design, and acting. She does not shy away from murder, blackmail, or sexual manipulation. Tezuka himself described the series as a satire on human society, which he compared to the survival strategies of insects.

Ken Ninomiya, known for his visually experimental and often dark films, plans to adapt the material as a "dark musical" – a blend of opulent music and dance numbers with the cynical, pessimistic tone of the original. The project was already presented to international buyers in a pitch session at the European Film Market of the Berlinale in February 2026. Specific details about the cast or release date are not yet available.

With this adaptation, K2 Pictures continues its course of financing challenging, adult-oriented material. The company was founded in 2023 by former Toei producer Muneyuki Kii and aims to reshape the Japanese film financing model. In addition to "The Book of Human Insects," K2 Pictures announced in Cannes, among other projects, an anime adaptation of Hiroya Oku's manga "Gigant" and a documentary project with Kabuki actor Ichikawa Danjūrō, directed by Takashi Miike.
