"Ossan Kensei": Kensho Ono and Sumire Uesaka as Siblings – Fourth Trailer for the Second Season

The anime adaptation of the fantasy novel "Katainaka no Ossan, Kensei ni Naru" ("From Old Country Bumpkin to Master Swordsman") is expanding its second season with two notable voices: Kensho Ono voices Warren Flumvelk, and Sumire Uesaka takes on the role of his sister Shuste. To coincide with the announcement, the fourth trailer was released, showing the two new characters in action for the first time.

Warren is the current lord of the Flumvelk territory, which lies directly on the national border. He was once trained by Beryl Gardenant and spent a large part of his apprenticeship alongside Allucia Citrus. Although he achieved complete mastery in swordsmanship, he did not pursue a career as a fighter, but instead developed an extraordinary talent for administering his land. His sister Shuste, on the other hand, enjoys the proper upbringing of a nobleman's daughter, knows the rules of social etiquette, and regards Beryl favorably, as she has already learned much about the aging sword master through her father and brother.

The fourth trailer offers a glimpse of the upcoming entanglements: At a noble feast, Beryl receives a marriage proposal from Shuste, while Allucia struggles with her feelings for her former teacher and confides in Warren. At the same time, the mercenary troop Verdeapis attacks to prevent the wedding.

Kensho Ono, known from "Haikyu!!" or "JoJo's Bizarre Adventure," praises the collaboration with Beryl's voice actor Hiroaki Hirata: "He is simply wonderful. For me, who myself one day wants to become such a great older gentleman, the recording sessions were a true stroke of luck," says Ono, who also points to the seventh episode. Sumire Uesaka, known among others from "No Game No Life" and "Love Live!", describes her character as a "young lady from a good family who exudes elegance and at the same time possesses the inner strength to resolutely follow her own path." She leaves open what effect Shuste's actions will have on Beryl and Allucia.

Both characters make their debut in the seventh episode titled "The Country Old Man Is Invited by a Noble," which airs on August 19. In it, Beryl and Allucia are invited to an evening gathering in the border march of Flumvelk, which borders the neighboring kingdom of Sfendyardvania. The journey also serves to explore the route for the planned arrival of Princess Sarakia. At the destination, an unexpected reunion awaits Beryl.

The source material comes from Shigeru Sagazaki and originally appeared on the web platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō starting in November 2020; the book series with illustrations by Tetsuhiro Nabeshima is published by Square Enix. Including the manga adaptation and spin-offs, the total circulation has now exceeded eleven million copies according to the publisher. The first season aired from April to June 2025, was available worldwide exclusively on Amazon Prime Video, and reached the top 10 of the streaming charts in more than 45 countries and regions; in May 2026, it was awarded the Storytelling Prize at the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting+ Awards in Singapore.

The second season has been airing since July 8, 2026, in the "IMAnimation W" programming block of the TV Asahi network as well as on AT-X and BS Asahi; on Prime Video, new episodes have been released weekly since July 9, also worldwide exclusively. Direction is again handled by Akio Kazumi, the twelve-episode season is produced by the studios Passione and Hayabusa Film, and the music is again contributed by Yasuharu Takanashi. The opening theme is by Unicorn with "Kurenai no Ha," and the ending theme by BLUE ENCOUNT with "Mikansei." Already at the end of June, further new voice actors for the second season were introduced with Takashi Kondo, Hiromu Mineta, and Hiroshi Yanaka.
