At the upcoming Kyoto International Manga and Anime Fair, taking place from September 16th to 17th, visitors can look forward to the unveiling of the pilot video for Sunao Katabuchi's anime film "The Mourning Children: Nagiko and the Girls Wearing Tsurubami Black." Along with this announcement, further details about the film's staff were also revealed.

The development of the film dates back to 2017 and presents a narrative set in 10th-century Kyoto, coinciding with the time when Sei Shōnagon wrote "The Pillow Book." Early indications suggest that the film will revolve around an epidemic, with characters bearing names such as Sei Shōnagon, Koretada, Tokinaka, Chikatada, and Takaie.

On the production side, Chie Uratani has been named assistant director. Masashi Ando serves as the chief animation director, while Toshiharu Mizutani oversees art direction.

The production company behind the film, Contrail, was founded by Katabuchi in 2019. Additionally, the studio's structure includes Manabu Ohtsuka from MAPPA as deputy director of Contrail.
