The manga classic "Boku no Chikyū o Mamotte" (internationally also known as "Please Save My Earth") by Saki Hiwatari is getting a live-action series adaptation. Production company THE SEVEN announced the project on August 21: The Prime Original series is set to launch worldwide exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and regions in autumn 2027. Alice Hirose, who recently impressed in series such as "Warotenka" and "366 Days," will play the lead role of the key character Mokuren. Direction is by Takahiro Miki, known for works like "Hodonaku, Owakare Desu" and "Konya, Sekai kara Kono Koi ga Kiete mo."

The source material was serialized from 1986 to 1994 in Hakusensha's manga magazine "Hana to Yume" and released in 21 collected volumes. With more than 16 million copies sold, the series ranks among the most successful of its genre and celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Among fans, the series is known by the nickname "Bokutama." A sequel, the third chapter "Boku wa Chikyū to Utau," is currently being serialized in Hakusensha's magazine "Melody."

The story revolves around high school student Alice Sakaguchi, who can talk to plants. One day, she realizes that she and her classmates share the same dreams about a past life: In these dreams, they were once seven alien scientists who lived on a moon base and observed Earth from there. Alice's neighbor, elementary school student Rin Kobayashi, awakens after an accident in the personality of his past self – the man who deeply loved Mokuren on the moon base. As the passionate love and guilt from the past life intersect with the newly forming relationships of the present, a disturbing truth gradually comes to light.

Mokuren, played by Alice Hirose, is a member of the moon crew and the key figure of the story. She loves her companions with all her heart but harbors a great secret she shares with no one. Her existence influences the fate of the characters across the boundaries of time. Hirose admitted that she initially wondered how the world of the material could even be realized on such a scale – only to be thrilled upon entering the large sets. The unfamiliar dialogue as well as costumes and makeup brought her great joy; moreover, the young actors of the present-day storyline came to the set to gather inspiration for their performances. Together, they intensively studied the source material and the script.

Director Takahiro Miki explained that when asked about a dream project, he always named this manga: The story about young people tormented by memories of a past life while learning to affirm their own imperfect lives deeply moved him. Author Saki Hiwatari expressed surprise that her work is being adapted at this time. She accompanied the production as a supervisor up to the script phase but has not yet seen the finished series. She wants to await the release with the same excitement as the readers and described the project as a celebration to be enjoyed together. Buddy Marini, head of Amazon MGM Studios in Japan, expressed confidence that the source material, beloved for more than 30 years, can move viewers around the globe.

Behind the series are notable talents: The script is by Nana Yamamoto, the music by Moshimoss. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios, with planning and production by THE SEVEN, which won the Grand Prix at the Asian Academy Creative Awards for its VFX work on Netflix's "Yu Yu Hakusho." Production company Kadokawa Daiei Studio is involved as the production studio. The scenes on the moon base and in space, long considered unfilmable, are to be created using state-of-the-art effects technology.

Already in the 1990s, "Boku no Chikyū o Mamotte" was adapted as a six-part OVA by Production I.G. However, the now-announced adaptation is the first with live actors. Given the complex narrative structure that shifts between present and past as well as between Earth and the moon, the project is considered one of the most ambitious Japanese series undertakings of the coming years.
