As further indicated in this letter, it was announced that the broadcaster has acquired the TV rights to the anime series "Inu Yasha" (based on the manga series of the same name by "Ranma ½" author Rumiko Takahashi). The broadcast could possibly begin by the end of 2002.

In the main part of the email, three main reasons are given for the changes in RTL II's early evening programming:

- declining ratings for "Ranma ½",

- declining ratings for "Dragon Ball Z",

- increasing discussions about violence on television, triggered by the Erfurt massacre at the end of April.

Dear Anime Fan,

In light of the recent changes to our anime programming, many fans are concerned about the future of their favorite series on RTL II. These concerns are unfounded. Below, however, we would like to briefly explain how these changes came about:

We wanted to air DBZ and Ranma ½ in the early evening, with the goal of staying as close to the original as possible and, as requested by many, broadcasting them "uncut"! Over the past few months, we have made an extraordinary effort to fulfill the wishes of all anime fans, whether it was regarding broadcast slots (premiere in the early evening, with original openers that we specially sourced from Japan), the color enhancement of the broadcast material, or the request for new voice actors. Now, three things have happened:

The broadcast of the anime classic "Ranma ½" as part of our early evening programming has not been as well received by viewers as we had expected, based on the many letters requesting exactly this timeslot. "Ranma ½" will therefore be briefly interrupted and resumed in late August in an afternoon timeslot, where the series has demonstrably reached the most viewers.

Significantly fewer anime fans than before want to watch the repeat broadcast of "DBZ" in the early evening, which RTL II had been airing in double episodes! As a result, RTL II has decided to air only one episode of "DBZ" per day—though this could change positively again if viewership numbers improve.

* The third event was a school massacre that shocked and sensitized the entire public. In the public discussion, the trigger for this is partly seen in TV series such as, among others, "DBZ"! We want to keep "DBZ" in the early evening and ensure this by editing a few episodes at some very critical points.

Finally, some hot news: We have managed to acquire "Inuyasha"—a highlight, especially for "Ranma ½" fans, perhaps a small compensation for the brief interruption of their favorite series! With some effort, a broadcast could still happen this year—toward the end of the year!

Best regards,

RTL II Viewer Editorial Team
