At the recently held Anime Expo, the development of an anime TV series based on Ryohgo Narita's Fate/Strange Fake spinoff was announced. The announcement was made by Type-Moon, the original creators of the Fate series. During the event, a US-exclusive teaser footage was revealed.

The anime special Fate/strange Fake -Whispers of Dawn- was showcased at the Anime Expo with the premiere of its English dub. Interestingly, the special also premiered in Japan on the same day and is now available on Crunchyroll with English dubbing. The TV anime special was announced in September during the Aniplex Online Fest 2022 but faced delays due to production issues and was originally scheduled to air on December 31.

The cast of the series includes a mix of Japanese and English voice actors. The Japanese cast features talents such as Kana Hanazawa, Yūki Ono, Tomokazu Seki, and Yū Kobayashi, among others. The English cast includes Anjali Kunapaneni, Ben Balmaceda, David Vincent, and Marin Miller, to name a few.

Directing the special are Shun Enokido and Takahito Sakazume, both known for their work on Fate/Grand Order commercials. The screenplay is penned by Daisuke Daitō, while Yūkei Yamada is responsible for character design and animation direction. The music for the series is composed by Hiroyuki Sawano, with the title song "FAKEit" contributed by his vocal project SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]:Laco.

The Fate/strange Fake narrative has a history that began as an April Fools' joke titled Fake/states night by Narita in 2008. The story was later expanded as a Fate/strange Fake supplement for the Type-Moon Ace Vol. 2 magazine and eventually developed into a full light novel series. The series has been ongoing since January 2015, with the eighth volume released in February. The series also includes a manga adaptation illustrated by Shizuki Morii.
