The episode begins with Will and Menel going into a forest to investigate an anomaly affecting the seasons. They encounter Cernunnos, the Lord of the Forest, who informs them that the Lord of the Oak and the Lord of the Holly, two ancient trees that govern the forest's seasons, are unable to transfer their power to one another, causing the forest to go wild.

Menel offers to temporarily take on the royal authority of the Lord of the Oak to resolve the issue. He undergoes a secret trial and successfully gains the authority. Then, they confront the Lord of the Holly, who initially resists but eventually accepts the power transfer. The Lord of the Holly warns them of an impending disaster known as the "Flame of Black Calamity," originating from the Rust Mountains, a demon-infested region.

Back in Whitesails, Crown Prince Ethel thanks them and speaks with Will and Menel about the importance of loyalty and making amends. Bishop Bagley joins them, and they discuss the Lord of Holly's warning. Menel explains that the Lords of the Forest are reliable sources and that the prophecy should be taken seriously.

Will reaches out to a friendly troubadour to gather information about the Rust Mountains. She tells the story of the former Ironlands, now a demon nest, and suggests that Will might obtain more information from the dwarf refugees in Torch Port.
