The episode is set in Torch Port, where Will and Menel discuss the recent arrival of dwarven immigrants. Will decides to visit Agnarr, the leader of the dwarves, to gather information about the Rust Mountains. During his visit, he meets Grendir, Agnarr's great-uncle, who tells him the tragic story of the Iron Mountains, their homeland. Grendir explains that they came to Torch Port to die in peace while gazing upon their homeland, which they hope to reclaim one day.

Will learns of Aurvangr, the last king of the Iron Mountains, who led his people in a desperate battle against invading demons. The king commanded his people to live on, even if it meant leaving their homeland. Grendir thanks Will for giving him hope of reclaiming their land.

Later, Will meets a young dwarf named Ru in a tavern. After mediating a dispute, Will offers to examine Ru's ailing father. In gratitude for Will's help, Ru and his family invite him to a meal. During the meal, Ru expresses his admiration for Will and his desire to become a warrior. Impressed by Ru's determination, Will offers to take him on as his servant and protector.

Ru enthusiastically accepts the offer and swears his loyalty to Will. Ghelreis, a dwarven elder, agrees but warns Ru that he must be prepared to die for Will if necessary. The episode ends with Ru becoming Will's Thane, marking the beginning of a new chapter in their lives.
