An anime film is being released for the award-winning action game "Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice". As producer Kadokawa announced on Tuesday, "SEKIRO: NO DEFEAT" will hit Japanese theaters in 2026. A first trailer has also been released.

The clip provides insights into the dark world of the Sengoku period: It shows the protagonist Wolf in fast sword fights, along with tragic and beautiful moments of the characters. The mix of relentless war and classic Japanese aesthetics is consistently hand-drawn as 2D animation.

The title music was contributed by the exceptional composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, who passed away in 2023 – his piece "Blu" from the album "The Best of 'Playing the Orchestra 2014'" underscores the trailer.

Almost all of the original Japanese voice actors from the game will return: Daisuke Namikawa once again voices Wolf, Miyuki Satō voices the young heir Kuro, and Kenjiro Tsuda voices his adversary Genichiro Ashina. New additions include Jin Urayama as the Sculptor, Shizuka Ito as Emma, and Tetsuo Kanao as Isshin Ashina.

The film is directed by Kenichi Kutsuna ("Magical Destroyers"). The script was written by Takuya Satō, and the character design was created by Takahiro Kishida ("Haikyu!!"). The film is produced by studios Qzil.la and ARCH in collaboration with Kadokawa.

The plot is based on the game developed by FromSoftware. It follows the loyal shinobi Wolf, who must protect his young lord in a province torn apart by rival clans. When the film will be released outside of Japan is still unknown. The streaming service Crunchyroll has already secured the international rights.
