The light novel series "Sentenced to Be a Hero: The Prison Records of Penal Hero Unit 9004," written by Rocket Shokai, is set to receive an anime adaptation, as confirmed during the livestream celebrating the 30th anniversary of Dengeki Bunko.
The series' unique premise revolves around the concept that heroism is a form of punishment reserved for the most severe criminals. The characters burdened with this fate are tasked with fighting on the front lines against the forces of the Demon King. Though death is a constant possibility, these unwilling heroes are expected to be revived and thrown back into battle. The plot takes an unexpected turn when their leader, guilty of deicide, strikes an unlikely contract with another goddess—one that could alter the course of their shared reality.
Rocket Shokai initially launched the novel series on Kadokawa's Kakuyomu website in October 2020. Subsequently, Kadokawa began publishing the series in print in September 2021. The fourth volume was released in December 2022.
