A new anime based on the Spice and Wolf series of fantasy novels, which is currently celebrating its 15th anniversary, has gone into production. There are no details about the project yet—even the format is unknown (the franchise's long history includes two TV series seasons, an OVA, and even a VR project) and its relation to previous adaptations (though there are rumors that a remake awaits us).

Yen Press licensed the Spice and Wolf light novel series in English and describes the series as follows:

The life of a traveling merchant is a lonely one, a fact that Kraft Lawrence is well familiar with. Wandering from town to town with just his horse, cart, and whatever wares happen to fill his pockets, he’s grown accustomed to the routine—until one night, he finds a sleeping wolf goddess in his cart. Holo, who takes the form of a beautiful girl with wolf ears and tail, is tired of tending to harvests in the countryside and strikes a bargain with the merchant: he lends her the cunning of “Holo the Wisewolf” to increase his profits, and in exchange, she takes him on her travels. What businessman could refuse such an offer? Lawrence soon learns, however, that having an ancient goddess as a traveling companion can be a double-edged sword. Will this wolf girl prove too wild to tame?

The original Spice and Wolf light novel was released in 2006 and adapted into two TV anime series in 2008 and 2009. The first season was directed by Takeo Takahashi at Imagin, while the second season was produced by Brain's Base alongside Marvy Jack.
