"Super Kaguya Hime!": Netflix Anime Film Revived with 4D, SCREENX, and Dolby Atmos

The original anime film "Super Kaguya Hime!" (Japanese: 超かぐや姫！) returns to Japanese theaters after its theatrical release in February and subsequent Netflix debut on September 18. The special feature: in addition to the regular version, the film will also be shown in the special formats MX4D, 4DX, SCREENX, ULTRA 4DX, and Dolby Atmos. This was announced by the production team led by director Shingo Yamashita.

The film, based on the Japanese folk tale "The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter," tells the story of high school student Iroha Sakayori (voiced by Anna Nagase), who one day rescues a mysterious baby from a glowing power pole. This baby quickly grows into a girl of the same age—Kaguya (Yūko Natsuyoshi), who claims to be from the moon. Together with virtual influencer Yachiyo Runami (Saori Hayami), they dive into the digital world Tsukuyomi, where they perform as streamers. The music comes from well-known Vocaloid producers such as ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), and HoneyWorks.

"Super Kaguya Hime!" initially ran for one week in Japanese theaters starting February 20, 2026. Due to overwhelming demand, the run was extended multiple times and the number of venues expanded. By June 18, the provisional end of the theatrical screenings, the film had grossed over 2.5 billion yen (about 16 million euros) and attracted more than 1.2 million viewers. One day after the end, on June 19, a farewell event with the main voice actors took place. Now, however, the film returns—with a bang.

The new special formats promise a more intense experience: MX4D and 4DX combine motion effects with environmental effects such as wind, water, and scents. SCREENX projects the image onto three screens, creating a 270-degree panorama. ULTRA 4DX combines SCREENX with motion seat technology, while Dolby Atmos provides spatial sound. The recently released trailer shows Kaguya shouting, "If that's the case, Kaguya! One more time!" before a remix of the song "World is Mine CPK! Remix" by Yachiyo plays.

Additionally, the online event "Tsukuyomi Thanksgiving" has been announced, which will take place in December 2026. The event was previously funded through a crowdfunding campaign that reached 5003% of its goal. In it, 3D models of the characters will appear in the VR world VRChat.

"Super Kaguya Hime!" continues to be available worldwide on Netflix. The special screenings starting September 18 offer a unique opportunity to experience the film in its most visually and acoustically elaborate form.
