The American broadcaster The Anime Network has announced that it will discontinue its 24-hour broadcasting operations in the USA starting this year. The network will now focus solely on its Anime on Demand service.

The Anime Network was founded in 2002 as a Video on Demand service by A.D. Vision (the parent company of the well-known anime label ADV Films) and began regular broadcasting two years later on various US cable networks as the first American 24-hour anime channel at the time.

The end of the broadcasting service does not come as a surprise to some insiders, as the channel struggled to establish itself or secure a permanent spot in many cable lineups. Additionally, as early as 2005, A.D. Vision director Matt Greenfield had made it clear that he saw the future of the network in the Video on Demand market.

With this move, FUNimation Channel (a company owned by the current U.S. anime market leader FUNimation) remains one of the few remaining American 24-hour anime broadcasters, while Sony's Animax in Asia and Europe continues to stand without competition.
