The manga "The Elusive Samurai" first appeared in Weekly Shonen Jump in January 2021, with the ninth volume released on January 4 and the tenth volume set for release on April 4. Both Viz Media and MANGA Plus publish new chapters of the manga digitally in English simultaneously with their debut in Japan. Viz Media also releases the manga in print.

The story follows Tokiyuki, who flees with a group of loyal followers after his family is slaughtered by the traitor Ashikaga Takauji. One of the followers, Suwa Yorishige, predicts that Tokiyuki will one day become the ruler of Japan.

Yusei Matsui previously worked as an assistant to Yoshio Sawai, the creator of the manga Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, and debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2005 with his 23-volume manga Neuro - Supernatural Detective. The manga inspired a 25-episode TV anime series in 2007-2008. In 2012, Matsui then launched "Assassination Classroom," which concluded in March 2016 with 21 volumes and inspired multiple TV anime series, a film, and two live-action adaptations.
