Studio Nexus will produce the series under the direction of Kazuya Nakanishi. Makoto Iino will design the characters, while Kanichi Kato will be responsible for the series' music.
Aizawa began publishing his comedy-fantasy novel on Shousetsuka ni Narou in May 2018. Kadokawa picked up the series in November of the same year under its Enterbrain label, with illustrations by Touzai. The fourth volume was released on February 26.
Yen Press licenses the light novel and describes the plot as follows:
Even in his previous life, Cid's dream wasn’t to become the protagonist or the final boss. He prefers to lurk in the background as a side character until it's time to prove he's a genius... or at least do the next best thing—pretend to be one! Now that he’s been reborn in another world, he’s ready to set the stage for enjoying his dreams to the fullest. With his overactive imagination, Cid hilariously recruits members for his organization and fabricates an entire backstory about an evil cult they must defeat. Luckily for him, these imaginary enemies turn out to be real—and everyone but him knows the truth!
