A completely new television series adaptation of Shirow Masamune's manga "The Ghost in the Shell" is currently in production under the commission of Bandai Namco Filmworks. The anime adaptation is being produced by Science SARU studio. Directing the series is Moko-chan, marking his directorial debut. The screenplay was written by Akutagawa Prize-winning science fiction author Enjō Tō, while Handa Shūhei serves as both character designer and chief animation director.

The story is set in a highly technological future where the boundaries between human and machine are increasingly blurred. It centers on the cybernetically enhanced agent Motoko Kusanagi, who leads the special unit Public Security Section 9 in the fight against cybercrime. With this project, the franchise returns to a more hand-drawn, two-dimensional animation style, marking a clear contrast to the previous fully computer-animated series "Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045." The original manga creator Shirow Masamune has described this adaptation as a sort of "second generation" for the series.

A high-caliber team has been assembled for the musical score. The composition is by Taisei Iwasaki, Ryō Konishi, and Yuki Kanesaka. The series is scheduled to premiere in July 2026.
