In addition, Riyoko Ikeda herself has created an illustration for this new film, which was made as part of the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the original work's publication.

The manga The Rose of Versailles has already been adapted into a 40-episode animated series, which aired on Japanese television between 1979 and 1980. There was also an animated film in 1990 and a French-Japanese live-action film in 1978. The most recent adaptation so far was a series of parody short films in Flash animation by DLE Inc.

Riyoko Ikeda published the original manga between 1972 and 1973 in the magazine Weekly Margaret, which was collected into a total of 10 volumes. Later, in 1986, she released the sequel Eikou no Napoleon and the alternate history Versailles no Bara Gaiden, which were 12 and 2 volumes long, respectively. The author herself also produced a yon-koma (4-panel manga) parodying the series between 2006 and 2013. In 2013, 40 years after the end of the original work, she published a 16-page one-shot titled Rose of Versailles Episode. Since then, she has continued to write short stories based on the series, most recently in 2016.
