The well-known wine manga series Kami no Shizuku (The Drops of God) will receive its first anime adaptation in April. The television series is being produced by Studio Satelight and directed by Kenji Itoso. Selected viewers in Tokyo will be able to experience a preview screening of the first two episodes as early as February 28.
The original manga, written by Tadashi Agi (a pseudonym for the sibling duo Shin and Yūko Kibayashi) and illustrated by Shū Okimoto, was serialized in Kodansha's Morning magazine from 2004 to 2014. It became a global phenomenon with over 15 million copies sold. The series' particularity lies in its detailed and respectful depiction of wine culture, which demonstrably influenced the sales of the wines featured within it.
The story follows Shizuku Kanzaki, the son of a world-famous wine critic, who has consciously turned away from wine and his father. However, after his father's death, he must prove himself in an extraordinary competition: to inherit the estate, he must identify thirteen legendary wines—the "Twelve Apostles" and the eponymous "Drops of God." His rival is Issei Tomine, his father's adopted son and protégé, an already recognized wine expert.
The anime will begin airing in Japan in April. For an international audience, the streaming service Crunchyroll has acquired the rights for numerous regions, including North and South America, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and the Middle East. This marks the third adaptation of the material, following a Japanese live-action series and an internationally produced series by Apple TV+.
The sequel to the original manga, Drops of God: Mariage, which focuses on the pairing of wine and food, as well as the recently concluded series Drops of God deuxième, demonstrate the enduring popularity of the subject.
