Manga Fever – the platform for up-and-coming artists
Four talents signed by German publisher TOKYOPOP!
Hamburg, June 2005 – With a focus on testing new storytelling and artistic talents, Manga Fever can already be considered a success. TOKYOPOP has now signed three book projects with mangaka who were involved in the sampler: Anike Hage will develop a story about a completely unusual girls' soccer team across two volumes, while Detta Zimmermann is working on an equally thrilling and poetic fantasy saga initially planned for three volumes. Marie Sann and Guido Neukamm will accompany a young manga artist on her adventures through Berlin in a one-shot. All three projects will premiere in spring 2006.
The idea behind the Manga Fever project has been well-received by German fans, as evidenced by the response rate of 13.09% in the reader voting. The parallel online voting on the ELLEgirl homepage also showed high traffic numbers, with nearly 1,000 users. Comments such as "Manga Fever is truly an excellent project...", "...Keep it up!..." and "...a great platform for German artists..." highlight the enthusiasm of both German readers and artists. Some see it as encouragement to submit their own works, while others are amazed by the abundance of hidden talents in Germany.
"We are confident," says Joachim Kaps, Managing Director of TOKYOPOP GmbH, "that Manga Fever was the starting signal for a new development, in the course of which many more 'made in Germany' manga projects will succeed. The demand for the project was so high that we decided to continue the series as a permanent part of TOKYOPOP's program." Work on the second Manga Fever volume is already in full swing, and TOKYOPOP is now accepting applications for a third edition. Applications should be sent to TOKYOPOP, Manga Fever, Bahrenfelder Chaussee 49, Haus B, 22761 Hamburg.
