The fantasy manga series "Nisemono no Renkinjutsushi" (English title: The Fake Alchemist) is receiving a TV anime adaptation. Publisher KADOKAWA announced this on June 18, 2026. The animation production will be handled by Studio Passione, which is already known for numerous fantasy works.
The series originally started as an indie project and quickly gained cult status. The commercial manga adaptation, illustrated by Umemaru and written by author Jiro Sugiura, has now reached a total circulation of over one million copies. The story is set in the city of Orichalconia, a world where alchemy and magic are part of everyday life. The reincarnated protagonist Paracelsus earns his living as an alchemist while hiding his powerful abilities. One day, he forms a pact with the slave and shaman Nora and encounters the elf Coco, who has been deprived of her four limbs and all senses. What begins as a rescue attempt in a small workshop evolves into a battle involving alchemy, magic, the cosmos, and even the gods—a story that encompasses "the entire fantasy genre."
The manga has been serialized on KADOKAWA's platform ComicWalker (under the Kadokomi label) since June 2023 and currently comprises five volumes (as of February 2026). The series is published in English by Yen Press.
To mark the announcement, a teaser visual and a "TV Anime Adaptation PV" have been released. The video shows the creation process of the visual of the female protagonist Nora, starting from Sugiura's initial sketches, through Umemaru's manga adaptation, to the final animation by Passione. Additionally, both Sugiura and Umemaru contributed handwritten comments and specially created illustrations of Nora.
Sugiura expressed surprise and delight: "I never dreamed that 'Nisemono no Renkinjutsushi' would one day get an anime adaptation. This is all thanks to the many supporters. Thank you very much! I hope you all enjoy it." Umemaru added: "The anime adaptation is confirmed! I am very happy that this work, which I love so much, is gaining new life through the hands of the fantastic animation team. As a fan of 'Nise-Ren,' I look forward to enjoying the finished images together with everyone."
To properly celebrate the anime's launch, the series' official X account (@niserenproject) is holding a giveaway where 100 participants will receive a QUO card worth 500 yen printed with the teaser visual. The deadline for entry is July 5, 2026.
Further details, including the broadcast period and cast, will be announced at a later date. The official anime website is accessible at niserem-project.com.
