A completely new adaptation of the series 'Armored Trooper Votoms' directed by Mamoru Oshii, titled 'Armored Trooper Votoms: The Gray Witch' (original title: 'Sōkō Kihei Votoms Haiiro no Hexe'), is being realized as a two-part film project. The first part is scheduled to hit Japanese theaters on November 20. As announced by the producers, a first teaser trailer and a new key visual have been released simultaneously. The film is being created as part of the 50th anniversary of Studio Sunrise in cooperation with Production I.G.
The newly released teaser features, among other things, battle scenes with the well-known mecha 'Scopedog' as well as a mysterious 'witch.' The accompanying teaser visual also shows a new version of the Scopedog.
The staff team is also prominently staffed: The creator of the original series, Ryōsuke Takahashi, is involved as a supervisor on the project. The mechanical design is handled by Shinobu Tsuneki (known for 'The Legend of the Galactic Heroes: Die Neue These') and Yoshiro Sono, who serves as the illustrator of the manga 'Armored Trooper Votoms: AT Stories.' The music is handled by Kenji Kawai, a long-time collaborator of director Oshii.
Director Mamoru Oshii, who describes himself as a big fan of the original series, commented: 'Some may be skeptical and think I would incorporate stand-up soba into the 'Votoms' world, but I am taking this quite seriously. I am producing a serious war action spectacle here.' Ryōsuke Takahashi also expressed confidence: 'I am a fan of Oshii's very own directorial 'touch' and look forward to seeing it again in the work on 'Votoms.''
Starting May 16, special movie ticket cards for the two-part set will be available for pre-sale. The design of the cards is based on the teaser visual. In addition to online sales, the tickets will also be available in limited quantities at the '64th Shizuoka Hobby Show' on May 16 and 17.
Parallel to the film releases, Bandai Spirits plans to sell a model kit ('HG Scopedog: Gray Witch (Desert Color)' – tentative title) in the fall. A new series of collector kits has also been announced by Megahouse. A specific date for the second part of the film has not yet been set.
