Urusei Yatsura - Episode 3

Episode 3 of "Urusei Yatsura" begins with a typical day in Ataru's class, where Lum lovingly hugs him and his girlfriend Shinobu expresses her frustration by throwing furniture at him. This routine is interrupted by the arrival of a new student, Mendou Shuutarou, a wealthy exchange student who parachutes onto the scene from a helicopter.

After Shinobu accidentally hits Mendou with a desk, she apologizes and is immediately drawn to him. This unsettles Ataru, but Mendou soon shifts his attention from Shinobu to Lum, who is floating through the classroom. Mendou quickly falls in love with Lum, though she remains loyal to Ataru.

That same day, the class representative election takes place. The male students, fearing Mendou's strict rules, nominate Ataru to run against him. The election ends in a tie: the boys vote for Ataru, the girls for Mendou. In response, Mendou challenges Ataru to a duel, which begins with the traditional throwing of a glove according to his family's customs. However, Mendou accidentally hits Lum with the glove, prompting her to retaliate.

The next day, Mendou parachutes into school again, this time colliding with Lum. Meanwhile, Ataru has a private conversation with Shinobu, who confesses her attraction to Mendou and rejects Ataru's feelings due to his past flirtatious behavior.

During a class trip to the forest, Lum showcases her fashion sense by wearing human clothes. In the woods, Mendou invites Lum to explore a limestone cave with him, and Ataru does the same with Shinobu. Inside the cave, a series of comedic mix-ups occur in the dark, as each character wants to be with their preferred partner: Lum wants Ataru, Ataru wants Shinobu, Shinobu wants Mendou, and Mendou wants Lum.

Ataru and Mendou try to manipulate the situation to their advantage, but their plans backfire, leading to various strange pairings. It turns out Mendou has a phobia of tight, dark spaces, which only manifests when he's not being watched by women. This trait adds complexity to his character, making him comparable to Ataru.

When their flashlights fail, Lum uses her electric powers to illuminate the cave, accidentally activating an alien spaceship hidden in the rock. The ship takes off, tearing a massive hole in the cave. The episode ends with everyone safe, but the spaceship reaches Earth's orbit, hinting at the possible awakening of a passenger on board. This conclusion sets the stage for further developments in the series and completes the lineup of eccentric characters.
