Urusei Yatsura - Episode 36

The second part of the season of "Urusei Yatsura" begins with a new start and a new ending. The episode focuses on Mendou Shuutarou, who undergoes an intense fitness training to the point of exhaustion. Out of concern, his friends Lum, Ataru, Shinobu, and Ryuunosuke visit him. During the visit, Lum reveals a device that allows them to travel into the past.

The group travels to Mendou's childhood, where the young Mendou mistakes them for intruders and calls his bodyguards to capture them. They escape, and Ataru hits the young Mendou with a plastic hammer out of frustration with his behavior. Mendou's sister Ryouko intervenes but ultimately plays a prank on him.

Later, Mendou and Ataru are captured, prompting Lum, Shinobu, and Ryuunosuke to launch a rescue mission. They attempt to disguise themselves in uniforms stolen from the guards by using one of Lum's devices to adjust the fit, though their appearance still partly gives them away. Ataru collaborates with the young Mendou to distract him and buy them time to escape.

The rescue by Lum, Shinobu, and Ryuunosuke succeeds, but the experience drives the older Mendou to aggressively chase the young Mendou and Ataru. This pursuit leads them into a room full of clay jars, setting the stage for Mendou's future efforts to confront his phobias. The episode ends with the group returning to the present and realizing that Mendou's phobias are ironically self-inflicted, as they were caused by the time travel.
