Sentai Filmworks has licensed the first TV anime season, which is based on Makoto Yukimura's manga Vinland Saga, and describes the story as follows:

Raised on tales of the legendary land Vinland, a place of warmth and abundance, young Thorfinn dreams of leaving the cold climate of Iceland behind and venturing into the great unknown. But when the sails of Vikings appear on the horizon, the boy is forced into a life of violence and brutality by the merciless Viking Askalaad. With no other choice but revenge, Thorfinn vows vengeance against the man who killed his family and plunges headfirst into a sprawling, blood-soaked coming-of-age epic that marches to the drums of war.
