In "The First Measure," we witness a series of intense events. The episode begins with the ominous arrival of Canute, foreboding trouble. Canute's intentions are clear: he wants Ketil to submit peacefully but will not hesitate to enforce his power if necessary. Despite this looming threat, Leif and Ketil's group manage to reach the farm first.

Upon arrival, Leif expresses his intention to buy Thorfinn's freedom. Seizing the opportunity, Pater suggests purchasing Einar and Arnheid as well. The tension is palpable, setting the stage for the drama to come.

Arnheid, who had attempted to flee with her lover Gardar, faces a severe setback. When Ketil learns of her betrayal, he mercilessly punishes her with a wooden stick.
