The awards of the 29th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, presented by the Asahi Shimbun, have been announced. The grand prize in the manga category was awarded to Rintaro for his work 1-Byou 24-Koma no Boku no Jinsei. The autobiographical graphic novel, published in December 2024 by Kawade Shobo Shinsha, was conceived by the renowned animation director specifically for a French publisher.
In the "Shinsei" (New Artist) category, which honors innovative artistic visions, Shiho Kido was awarded for Dokudami no Hanasaku Koro. The story vividly portrays young protagonists who exist outside societal expectations. The prize for best short story went to Shunji Enomoto's The Kinks, which captures the daily life of a family of four in a small Japanese town.
The special prize for distinguished contributions to manga culture was awarded to the Yokote City Masuda Manga Art Museum Foundation. The institution was honored for its long-standing work in archiving original artwork and thus preserving the cultural heritage of the medium.
The award ceremony will take place on June 5 at the Asahi Hall in Tokyo. Afterwards, Rintaro and jury member Osamu Akimoto will discuss animation traditions in a talk session, including works by the prize's namesake, Osamu Tezuka.
