The fantasy anime adaptation of "Witch Hat Atelier" is getting a second season: Immediately after the finale of the first season on June 22, 2026, those in charge announced the continuation. Crunchyroll secured the worldwide streaming rights outside of Asia and will show the new episodes in simulcast.
Director Ayumu Watanabe thanked fans for their support and emphasized that the team implemented every episode of the first season with great care and as close to the manga source material as possible. He stated they intend to maintain this standard in the second season as well. At the same time, he announced that the story will become significantly larger and more profound: New settings, additional characters, and further insights into the world as well as the different forms of magic are on the horizon.
Manga creator Kamome Shirahama also expressed her joy about the continuation and congratulated the production team. In an interview at Anime Expo 2026, she explained that the wait would definitely be worth it. Looking at the abrupt end of the first season—the finale ended with a cliffhanger during the exam at Snakeback Pass when the enemy Krimpen Hats attacked—Shirahama promised an even deeper plot. "The world will feel much larger and more expansive, the themes will go deeper, and viewers will see different sides of magic," said the author. She urged fans to pay special attention to the characters' decisions and the newly introduced characters.
Watanabe had previously described the adaptation as a "bold endeavor": For Episode 5, the battle between Qifrey and a dragon, over 20,000 individual drawings were needed. Studio Bug Films, which was also responsible for "Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead," is producing the second season. At Anime Expo 2026, the first teaser trailer was also shown.
The original manga by Kamome Shirahama has been serialized in Kodansha's Morning Two magazine since July 2016 and now comprises 16 volumes. With over 9 million copies in circulation and awards such as the Harvey Award and the Eisner Award, the series is among the most internationally successful current manga series. A spin-off titled "Witch Hat Atelier Kitchen" has been published since November 2019.
A specific start date for the second season has not yet been set. The first 13 episodes are available on Crunchyroll in German dubbing as well as in the original Japanese with subtitles.
