In the first episode of Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru, viewers meet Akane, a girl with a broken heart who was recently dumped by her boyfriend Takuma for another woman he met in an online game. To cope with her sadness, Akane immerses herself in the same game and tries to vent her frustration by hunting virtual creatures.

During one of her hunting sessions, she encounters Yamada, an aloof and somewhat antisocial character.
