Potiguara Lopes
Description
Potiguara Lopes was a Brazilian voice actor, dubbing director, and translator, recognized for his extensive work in dubbing foreign productions for the Brazilian market. He began his career in the 1960s, with some sources indicating a start in 1965 at the AIC studio in São Paulo, while others point to 1969. Over his decades-long career, he worked at several prominent dubbing studios, including BKS, Elenco, Maga, and Marshmallow.
Lopes is perhaps most widely remembered for being the first voice of Professor Girafales in the Brazilian Portuguese dubs of the popular series Chaves and Chapolin. He also provided voices for other characters in these series, such as Sr. Calvillo and, in some episodes, the character Jaiminho, the mailman. His role as a dubbing director was also significant, as he directed the initial episodes of these same series at the Maga studio.
Beyond his iconic work in live-action comedies, Lopes contributed his voice to numerous animated productions and films. In animation, his credits include voicing Floyd in the series Kissyfur and various additional characters in classic cartoons like Woody Woodpecker. A notable role in anime was as the Minister of War (Ministro da Guerra) in the first dubbing of the 1963 film The Little Prince and the Eight-Headed Dragon. He also had roles in other Japanese productions, with reports of him voicing characters in series such as Changeman, Jaspion, and Flashman.
His film dubbing work was extensive and included a wide range of characters. Notable examples include providing the Portuguese voice for Frank Oz's character, Mr. Collins, in An American Werewolf in London, and for Michael Palin as one of the Wise Men in Monty Python's Life of Brian. He also voiced characters in films such as Chino, Digby, the Biggest Dog in the World, and Captain Nemo and the Floating City.
In addition to his on-screen voice work, Lopes worked as a translator, rendering scripts from English, Spanish, and French into Portuguese. He was responsible for translating a large portion of the Chaves and Chapolin episodes early in their dubbing history. Potiguara Lopes passed away in 1992 at the age of 50. While some sources cite a heart problem, others list diabetes as the cause.
