Satomi Mikuriya

Description
Satomi Mikuriya was a Japanese manga artist and anime creator active from the 1970s until her death in 2022. Born on May 20, 1948 in Nagasaki Prefecture, her professional career began in 1970 with the publication of the short story Kuroi Tsurugi. She emerged as a distinctive voice in the gekiga (dramatic comic) genre, known for combining detailed mechanical realism with dark science fiction and international action narratives.

Mikuriya is recognized as the original creator behind several anime productions from the late 1970s and 1980s. She shares original concept credit for the 1979 television series Entaku no Kishi Monogatari: Moero Arthur, a futuristic reimagining of Arthurian legend produced by Toei Animation. She continued in the same role for its follow-up, Moero Arthur: Hakuma no Oji, which aired in 1980. Her most direct involvement in anime came with the 1985 original video animation Nora, for which she served as original creator, director, scriptwriter, storyboard artist, and character and mechanical designer. This level of creative control over an anime adaptation was uncommon for a manga author at the time.

Beyond her own original anime concepts, Mikuriya contributed her technical expertise to major animated features. She was the mechanical designer for the 1980 film Hi no Tori 2772: Ai no CosmoZone, directed by Osamu Tezuka, and also adapted that film into a manga. She worked as a CG director for portions of the 1983 theatrical anime Golgo 13, making her an early adopter of computer graphics in Japanese animation. She also wrote the screenplay for the 1989 anime film Gallaga.

Mikuriya's manga bibliography is extensive and defined by recurring themes of aviation, advanced machinery, and capable female protagonists. Her deep knowledge as an aviation enthusiast is reflected in works such as Ikaros no Musume, about a young Japanese woman pursuing a pilot's license in the United States, and the Reno Air Race-themed short story 56 Miles no Akuma. Her most famous character, Nora Scola, first appeared in the 1977 short story Nora no Hakobune, which introduced the tough yet charming female military officer. The Nora series continued with stories such as Nora: Ryuukai Kaishuu and the OVA adaptation, and remained a signature work throughout her career.

Other notable manga include the long-running international thriller Saketa Ryoken, the supernatural Western Yami no Densetsu, and the later series Rusaruka wa Kaeranai, which marked her return to comics in 1997 after a period of inactivity caused by writer's cramp. She also produced short science fiction collections such as Ore no Kirai na Sensou.

Satomi Mikuriya died on December 14, 2022 at the age of 74. Her career left a significant mark on both manga and anime through her precise mechanical illustrations, her dark and detailed science fiction narratives, and her pioneering hands-on role in adapting her own comics into animated works. She remained a respected figure for her technical skill and the strong, independent heroines who populated her stories.
