Michele Kalamera
Description
Michele Kalamera was an esteemed Italian voice actor, renowned for his extensive and versatile career in dubbing, which included significant contributions to the world of anime for Italian audiences. Born Michelino Calamera on February 12, 1939, in Conegliano, Veneto, his path to voice acting was rooted in classical theatre. After studying at the Accademia Nazionale d'Arte Drammatica Silvia D'Amico in Rome, he co-founded the Teatro Stabile dell'Aquila with actor Gigi Proietti in 1963, marking the beginning of his professional performing career.
While Kalamera became widely celebrated as the official Italian voice of Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood for over four decades, a role personally chosen by Eastwood himself in 1976, his voice work extended far beyond live-action film. He brought his distinctive, authoritative, and nuanced vocal talent to a wide array of animated characters, leaving a notable mark on the anime series and films dubbed for Italian television and home video.
In the realm of anime, Kalamera took on a variety of roles, often lending his voice to villains, mentors, and narrators. He voiced the character Barton in the 1999 special Lupin III: The Columbus Files. For the series My Patrasche, a 1992 anime adaptation of the novel A Dog of Flanders, he provided the voice for the character Russman in the Italian redubbing. He also voiced the antagonist Rasputin in the OVA series Master of Mosquiton. One of his prominent roles in animated film was as the villainous Re dell'Incubo (Nightmare King) in the 1989 fantasy film Little Nemo - Adventures in Slumberland.
His extensive anime filmography, as documented by specialized databases, demonstrates a long-standing engagement with the genre. He was a frequent voice for narrator roles, most prolifically in the early Italian editions of the Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z films. He also voiced significant characters such as Genma Saotome in the initial episodes of Ranma ½, Lord Slug in the Dragon Ball Z film of the same name, Watari in Death Note, and Totosai in InuYasha: The Final Act. Other credits include roles in series like Captain Future, Gintama, Gurren Lagann, and Space Pirate Captain Harlock, as well as the live-action film Shin Godzilla. This body of work shows a career-long contribution to bringing Japanese animation to Italian-speaking audiences.
Throughout his career, Kalamera received recognition for his dubbing work, winning the Voci nell'ombra award three times and the Premio Internazionale del Doppiaggio, all for his performances as Clint Eastwood. These accolades underscore the high regard in which he was held within the Italian dubbing industry. Michele Kalamera passed away on July 25, 2023, at the age of 84, leaving behind a rich legacy that spans theatre, cinema, and animation.
