Kazuhiro Ochi
Description
Kazuhiro Ochi is a Japanese animator, animation director, illustrator, and manga artist born on February 19, 1962, in Gifu Prefecture. He is recognized for his work as an original creator across anime, manga, and video games. Ochi began his career at a remarkably young age, dropping out of high school and making his debut as an animator at sixteen on the series Space Demon Daikengo. He studied under the influential animator Yoshinori Kanada, whose dynamic style heavily shaped Ochi's early approach to action and composition.
Ochi made his key animation debut in 1980 on New Tetsujin-28. His early representative works include the series Six God Combination Godmars and The Legend of the Devil Acro Bunch, where his Kanada-influenced animation drew significant attention in anime magazines. He expanded his role in production at the age of twenty, taking on storyboard and direction duties for Warrior of Love Rainbowman.
As an original creator, Ochi is the author of the Cosmic Fantasy series, a collection of role-playing games released for the PC Engine CD starting in 1990. He conceived the original story and characters, and later wrote and directed the original video animation adaptation titled Cosmic Fantasy: Galaxy Cougar's Trap in 1994. Ochi has stated that he personally approached Telenet, the game's publisher, to work in the industry and that his creative process for the series typically began with character designs before developing the script. The series was notable for its early use of anime-style cutscenes and voice acting.
In 1987, Ochi made his directorial debut with the original video animation Gakuen Tokusō Hikaruon, for which he also served as original creator, scriptwriter, character designer, and storyboard artist. That same year, he became the first director and character designer for the television anime Lady Lady!!. His career has also included directing the anime adaptation of PopoloCrois in 2003 and serving as a storyboard artist for series such as Doki Doki! PreCure and Dragon Ball Super.
In later years, Ochi has become highly regarded for his illustration work, particularly recreating the art styles of classic 1970s animators for DVD and Blu-ray jacket illustrations. His reproduction of these styles is noted for its fidelity to the original works. He has also worked as a general supervisor for the Soul of Chogokin toy line and serialized a web comic called Dynamic Heroes featuring Go Nagai's characters. A collection of his illustrations, Super Robots & Heroes, Artworks, was published in July 2022, accompanied by a solo exhibition in Tokyo.
