Mika Akitaka

Description
Mika Akitaka is a Japanese mechanical designer, illustrator, game creator, and original character designer. Born on April 17, 1964, Akitaka is male, despite having once cultivated a public persona as a female high school mechanical designer during his early career.

Akitaka began his professional path while still in high school, joining the studio Shunei-sha and working as a mechanical designer for Sunrise on major anime franchises. His early credits include work on Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, and City Hunter. He later contributed to other entries in the Gundam series, such as Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket and Mobile Suit Gundam 0083: Stardust Memory. In the model graphics magazine Model Graphix, he created a popular series of illustrations known as MS Girls, which depicted young women wearing and integrated with mobile suit-style armor.

Akitaka is the original creator of the Galaxy Fraulein Yuna franchise. The project began in 1992 when Red Company, in association with Hudson Soft, asked Akitaka to create a video game for the PC Engine Super-CD console. He served as the writer, character designer, and illustrator for the resulting game, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna. The game was a visual novel that followed Yuna Kagurazaka, a teenager who becomes the armored Savior of Light. The series expanded into several sequels for platforms including the PC Engine, PC-FX, Sega Saturn, and PlayStation, as well as art books, music CDs, and drama CDs.

The franchise was adapted into two original video animation (OVA) series. The first, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna, was released as a two-episode OVA in 1995. The second, Galaxy Fraulein Yuna Returns, is a three-episode OVA released from 1996 to 1997. Akitaka is credited as the original story creator and character designer for both anime productions.

Following the Galaxy Fraulein Yuna series, Akitaka continued to work with Red Entertainment (formerly Red Company) as the lead mechanical designer for the Sakura Wars series, starting with Sakura Wars 3. His later mechanical design credits include work on the anime series Martian Successor Nadesico, Sky Girls, and Date A Live, as well as films like Mobile Suit Gundam Narrative and the 2021 film Sing a Bit of Harmony. He also contributed mecha designs to the 2014 light novel series The Irregular at Magic High School.

Akitaka is recognized for pioneering the mecha musume genre, which combines mechanical and少女 (girl) elements, through his MS Girls artwork. He is also known to have close professional friendships with fellow designers Katoki Hajime and artist Asamiya Kia.
