Shinji Cobkubo

Description
Shinji Cobkubo is a Japanese author known for creating the original story behind the anime and manga series Sabikui Bisco, also known as Rust-Eater Bisco. Cobkubo made his professional writing debut with the Sabikui Bisco light novel series, which began publication in March 2018 by ASCII Media Works under their Dengeki Bunko imprint. The series has been illustrated by K Akagishi, with world-building art contributions from mocha.

Before the light novel series began, Cobkubo submitted an early version of the manuscript to the 24th Dengeki Novel Prize in 2017, where it was awarded the Silver Prize. Following this recognition, the series gained significant critical acclaim. In 2019, Sabikui Bisco achieved the rare distinction of ranking first in both the general category and the new works category of the Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! annual guidebook, a first in the publication's history.

Cobkubo has described himself as an amateur when he began writing the novel, noting that plotting and narrative structure were his weak points. He has cited the manga Fist of the North Star and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, as well as the science fiction novel Ad Bird by Makoto Shiina, as formative influences on his storytelling. In an interview, he explained that he aimed to create a world that felt both unfamiliar and familiar, providing readers with a sense of discovery.

The success of the light novel led to multiple adaptations. A manga adaptation of the first part, illustrated by Yūsuke Takahashi, was serialized in Square Enix's Manga UP! magazine from April 2019 to March 2021 and collected into four volumes. A second manga series, Rust-Eater Bisco 2, illustrated by Sō Natsuki, ran from December 2021 to October 2022 and was collected into three volumes. An anime television adaptation produced by studio OZ aired for twelve episodes from January to March 2022. The English language version of the light novel has been licensed by Yen Press.

Cobkubo has stated that a central theme of his work is love, which he defines as the moment a person stakes their life to face something important, describing it as a person's most shining and beautiful moment. He has expressed a desire to convey this concept through entertainment rather than philosophical writing. The world of Sabikui Bisco is a post-apocalyptic Japan ravaged by a deadly rust plague, and its settings draw motifs from Buddhism and Hindu mythology, a choice Cobkubo has attributed to his personal appreciation for the grand scale of Hindu myth. He has also cited the concept of faith as a practical force that prevents his protagonist from becoming a dark force.
