Masafumi Nishida
Description
Masafumi Nishida is a Japanese screenwriter, director, and original creator known for his work across both live-action and animated television series and films. Born on May 22, 1975, in Tokyo, he is a graduate of the law faculty at Gakushuin University. Before establishing himself as a writer, he was a member of a comedy duo affiliated with the talent agency Horipro from 1995 to 1999. His early career included work as an actor on stage and in television dramas, but he gradually moved into writing and directing for TV, film, and theater.
Nishida first gained significant recognition for his work in live-action television. He wrote for dramas such as Maou and the live-action adaptations of Kaibutsu-kun and Youkai Ningen Bem. His film writing credits from this period include movies like Gachi Boy and Oppai Volley. This background in live-action storytelling laid the foundation for his later success in the anime industry.
His major breakthrough in animation came with the superhero series Tiger & Bunny, where he served as the primary scriptwriter and was a key creative force behind the original story. The series proved highly popular, and Nishida continued his involvement by writing the scripts for its two theatrical films, Tiger & Bunny: The Beginning and Tiger & Bunny: The Rising, as well as returning for the series composition on the sequel, Tiger & Bunny 2.
In addition to his work on established franchises, Nishida has created original anime properties. In 2021, he was the original creator, general director, series composition writer, scriptwriter, and sound director for RE-MAIN, an original television anime series centered on the sport of water polo. That same year, he was also credited as the co-creator of the manga Tesla Note, for which he co-developed the original story alongside film producer Tadayoshi Kubo. Tesla Note was quickly adapted into an anime television series, with Nishida supervising and writing the scripts.
A recurring theme in Nishida's work is the creation of original properties, often in collaboration with other producers or studios. Both RE-MAIN and Tesla Note are explicitly credited as original works developed by Nishida alongside production partners like Bandai Namco Arts and MAPPA, or co-creators like Tadayoshi Kubo. His artistic identity is that of a versatile storyteller capable of moving between genres, from superheroes in Tiger & Bunny to espionage in Tesla Note and sports drama in RE-MAIN. His hands-on role in RE-MAIN, where he took on multiple responsibilities including sound direction, demonstrates a comprehensive approach to anime production that extends beyond writing.
Nishida is significant in the anime industry as a creator who successfully transitioned from live-action to animation, bringing a different sensibility to his projects. His consistent involvement in major franchises like Tiger & Bunny, both in its original run and its revival years later, highlights his lasting importance to that property. Furthermore, his ability to launch new original manga and anime projects like Tesla Note and RE-MAIN establishes him as a proactive creator who develops new intellectual properties for the market.
