Yūga Yamato
Description
Yūga Yamato is a Japanese stage actress and voice actor known for transitioning from a celebrated career in musical theater to anime voice work. Born on August 4, 1977, in Tokyo, she began her performance career in 1995 when she joined the all-female Takarazuka Revue, a prestigious musical theater company. As an otokoyaku, a performer who specializes in male roles, she became a prominent star. She was a member of the Moon Troupe before transferring to the Cosmos Troupe in 2003. In February 2007, Yamato was promoted to top star of the Cosmos Troupe, a position she held until her resignation from the company in July 2009. During her time with the revue, she played leading roles in numerous stage productions, including performances of Me and My Girl, West Side Story, and Guys and Dolls.
Following her departure from Takarazuka, Yamato continued to build a prolific career in stage theater. She took on a wide variety of roles in musicals and plays, including starring as Mamoru Chiba, also known as Tuxedo Mask, in multiple Sailor Moon musical productions from 2013 to 2017. This role marked her as the first actress to play the character in the long-running series. Her other notable stage work includes performances in Chicago and the musical adaptation of Der Freischütz.
Yamato's transition to voice acting in anime is marked by a single, prominent role. She voices the titular character, Queen, in the 2022 original video animation Kaitō Queen wa Circus ga Osuki, which is based on the novel series of the same name. The character of Queen is a mysterious phantom thief whose gender, age, and nationality are unknown, traveling the world in an airship. Yamato is set to reprise this voice role in the upcoming 2025 anime film sequel, Kaitō Queen no Yūga na Kyūka. This role represents her most significant and, to date, only credit in the anime industry.
