Kō Nishimura
Description
Kō Nishimura was a prolific Japanese actor whose career spanned nearly five decades, during which he made significant contributions to film, television, and voice acting for anime. Born in Sapporo, Hokkaido, on January 25, 1923, he was active in the entertainment industry from 1946 until his death on April 15, 1997. He was sometimes credited under the name Akira Nishimura, as the kanji in his given name can be read either way.
While primarily known for his extensive live-action work, Nishimura's distinctive voice also brought several memorable anime characters to life. His voice acting credits include the role of Uncle Drosselmeyer, as well as the Street Singer, Puppeteer, and Watchmaker in the 1979 stop-motion animated film Nutcracker Fantasy. That same year, he also voiced the character of the Glass-Eating Mime in the film The Boss's Boss. Another notable anime role was the Old Bean-Seller in the 1974 film Jack and the Beanstalk. Earlier, in 1978, he provided the voice for the titular villain Mamo, also known as Howard Lockewood, in the feature film Lupin III: The Mystery of Mamo.
Nishimura's career, however, was firmly rooted in live-action, where he established himself as a highly respected character actor. He made his film debut in 1951 and went on to appear in numerous classic Japanese films, often in supporting roles. He worked with acclaimed directors such as Akira Kurosawa in films like The Bad Sleep Well and Yojimbo, Kon Ichikawa in The Burmese Harp, and Kihachi Okamoto in The Sword of Doom. His talent was recognized with several awards, including the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actor in 1964 for his role in Unholy Desire and the Mainichi Film Award for Best Actor in 1982 for his performance in Matagi.
In Japan, he became a household name for his portrayal of the title character, Tokugawa Mitsukuni, in the long-running and popular television period drama Mito Kōmon, a role he played for nearly a decade from 1983 to 1992. His extensive filmography also includes prominent roles in series such as Lone Wolf and Cub and the film 47 Ronin. His legacy as a versatile and skilled actor is evident in the breadth and depth of his work across multiple genres and media.
