Naoki Serizawa
Description
Naoki Serizawa is a Japanese manga artist, photographer, and cinematographer born on September 13, 1976. He began his professional career in photography and later worked as a director of photography on several anime productions, including Duel Masters, Happy Lesson Advanced, Mouse, Sumomomo Momomo, and Yumeiro Pâtissière. Serizawa transitioned into manga creation in 2000 with the series Shiro, détective catastrophe, which he wrote and illustrated until 2002. That same year, he created the short series Samurai Man.
Serizawa is best known as the original creator of Saru Lock, a manga series he wrote and illustrated that was serialized in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine from 2003 to 2009 and collected in 22 volumes. The series, whose title translates to Monkey Lock, is an action comedy that follows a young locksmith who uses his skills to solve various problems and mysteries. Saru Lock was adapted into a 13-episode live-action television drama that aired on Yomiuri TV from July to October 2009, directed by Tetsu Maeda and Renpei Tsukamoto. A live-action film adaptation was subsequently released in February 2010, also directed by Tetsu Maeda. Serizawa launched a sequel series, Saru Lock Reboot, in Young King Bull magazine beginning in October 2018.
Following Saru Lock, Serizawa created the medical manga La Main droite de Lucifer, which was published from 2010 to 2011. He was then commissioned by Capcom to work on manga adaptations within the Resident Evil franchise, providing the artwork for Resident Evil: Marhawa Desire from 2012 to 2013 and Resident Evil: Heavenly Island from 2015 to 2017. Serizawa also wrote and illustrated the manga Psycho Bank from 2015 to 2018. From November 2020 to June 2021, he wrote and illustrated the series Saitō - Heaven's Crow Fūun Risshi in Young King Bull magazine. His other manga work includes Billion Dogs in 2013 and Black Jack Alive in 2005, for which he provided the artwork. Serizawa also served as character designer for the anime Gibiate in 2020.
