Magica Quartet
Description
Magica Quartet is a collaborative collective credited as the original creator of the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise. Rather than being a single individual, Magica Quartet is a team formed by members from the anime production studio SHAFT and the entertainment company Aniplex. The quartet consists of producer Atsuhiro Iwakami, director Akiyuki Shinbo, writer Gen Urobuchi, and character designer Ume Aoki, who is also known for creating the manga Sunshine Sketch.
The collective was assembled specifically to develop an original anime series that would revitalize and subvert the magical girl genre. Producer Atsuhiro Iwakami chose not to adapt an existing work, allowing the creative team greater freedom. Akiyuki Shinbo expressed a desire to create a new magical girl series, while Gen Urobuchi, recommended for his work on Fate/Zero, was brought in to write a "heavy" storyline. Ume Aoki was engaged to provide character designs that contrasted with the series' dark themes.
The team's flagship work, the anime television series Puella Magi Madoka Magica, premiered in Japan on January 7, 2011. The twelve-episode series follows middle school student Madoka Kaname and her friends who are offered the chance to become magical girls in exchange for having any wish granted, only to discover the immense suffering and peril associated with their new roles. The series became a critical and commercial success, with each Blu-ray Disc volume selling over 50,000 copies in Japan. It received numerous accolades, including the Television Award at the 16th Animation Kobe Award, twelve Newtype Anime Awards, and the Grand Prize for the Animation Division at the 15th Japan Media Arts Festival in 2011.
Following the television series, Magica Quartet expanded the franchise across multiple media. A manga adaptation illustrated by Hanokage was published by Houbunsha beginning in February 2011, and a novelization written by Hajime Ninomae was released by Nitroplus Books in August 2011. Two recap films, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 1: Beginnings and Part 2: Eternal, were released in October 2012. A third film featuring an original story, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 3: Rebellion, was released in October 2013. A sequel film to Rebellion, titled Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie Part 4: Walpurgisnacht Rising, is scheduled for release.
The franchise has also spawned numerous spin-off manga and anime adaptations under the Magica Quartet credit, including Puella Magi Oriko Magica, Puella Magi Kazumi Magica, Puella Magi Suzune Magica, Puella Magi Tart Magica, and Puella Magi Homura Tamura. The mobile game Magia Record: Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story launched in August 2017, and a three-season anime adaptation produced by SHAFT aired from January 2020 to April 2022.
The artistic identity of Magica Quartet is defined by a deconstruction of the traditional magical girl genre, blending dark psychological themes, surreal visual imagery, and a narrative that explores consequences, sacrifice, and despair alongside hope. While the original creative team has remained associated with mainline entries, spin-off works have involved different writers, artists, and directors while retaining the Magica Quartet credit for franchise consistency.
