Afro

Description
Afro is a Japanese manga artist and writer best known as the creator of the Laid-Back Camp series, as well as the manga mono. Much of the creator's personal background, including gender and exact date of birth, is not publicly shared. Afro is known to have previously lived in Hamamatsu in Shizuoka Prefecture and currently resides in Kofu City, the capital of Yamanashi Prefecture, which serves as the primary setting for Laid-Back Camp.

Afro's professional debut came with the work Flying Orange on Monday, published by Houbunsha. Prior to achieving widespread recognition, Afro created a handful of other manga that did not see long serialization, as well as a spin-off comic for the Puella Magi Madoka Magica franchise titled Puella Magi Homura Tamura: Parallel Worlds Do Not Remain Parallel Forever, which gained a notable following.

The creator's major breakthrough came with Laid-Back Camp, which began serialization in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Forward magazine in July 2015. The series follows the daily lives of high school girls who enjoy camping and outdoor cooking in the Yamanashi region. The manga moved to the publisher's Comic Fuz website and app in 2019, and as of early 2025, it has been collected into eighteen tankōbon volumes. Laid-Back Camp has become a highly successful franchise, spawning multiple anime adaptations. A twelve-episode anime series produced by C-Station aired from January to March 2018, followed by a short anime spin-off titled Room Camp from January to March 2020. A second anime season ran from January to April 2021, and an anime film premiered in July 2022. A third season aired from April to June 2024, with a fourth season announced for a 2027 premiere. A live-action drama series has also been produced.

The Room Camp anime, sometimes referred to as Heya Camp, is a direct spin-off of Laid-Back Camp. The source material for this short series is a collection of chapters under the same name written and illustrated by Afro, which focuses on the characters spending time in their school clubroom.

In addition to the Laid-Back Camp franchise, Afro is the author of mono. This four-panel manga series began serialization in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Miracle! magazine in May 2017 before transferring to Manga Time Kirara Carat in December of the same year. The story follows a high school photography club member and a former manga artist. An anime television series adaptation produced by Soigne has been announced and is scheduled to premiere in April 2025.

Afro's artistic identity is characterized by a focus on slice-of-life and comedy genres, with a particular emphasis on detailed depictions of real-world locations, camping equipment, and outdoor activities. The work often explores themes of friendship and a quiet appreciation for nature. The creator uses an image of a husky as a self-representative in artwork and other materials.
