Kokone Nata

Description
Kokone Nata is a Japanese manga artist and web comic creator, best known as the author and illustrator of the series Play It Cool, Guys, known in Japanese as Cool Doji Danshi. Nata began developing the concept for this work as a series of illustrations posted on social media in May 2018. The positive response to these initial drawings led to the official serialization of the manga as a web comic on the Pixiv platform starting on February 23, 2019. The series is published in print by Square Enix under their Gangan Comics Pixiv imprint, with the first compiled volume released in June 2019. As of October 2022, five tankōbon volumes have been published. The series is also released in English by Yen Press, which began distributing the manga in North America in March 2021.

The original manga is notable for being produced entirely in full color. Nata has developed an efficient working style for this process, reportedly capable of coloring one page in approximately thirty minutes and completing the coloring work for nineteen pages within a single day. The work is classified with a josei demographic, targeting adult female readers.

The success of the original manga led to multiple adaptations. An anime television series adaptation produced by the studio Pierrot aired in Japan from October 2022 to March 2023, spanning twenty-four episodes of fifteen minutes each. Following the main anime, a two-episode original net animation titled Petit Cool Doji Danshi no Hitokoma was released in March 2023. This short-form spin-off was produced by a different studio, Aqua Aris. Beyond animation, a live-action television drama adaptation was also produced and broadcast on TV Tokyo from April to July 2023. Furthermore, a novel adaptation written by Shino Kaida, titled Cool Doji Danshi: Connect It Cool, Guys, was published by Square Enix in March 2020.

The recurring artistic identity in Nata's work centers on slice-of-life comedy with a focus on character-driven humor. The central theme of Play It Cool, Guys follows a group of young men who possess a cool, attractive appearance but are prone to embarrassing, clumsy mistakes, which they then attempt to play off nonchalantly. The narrative is episodic and lighthearted, emphasizing relatable, low-stakes social situations and the comedic gap between one's self-presentation and reality. The art style is characterized by a clean, modern aesthetic with a vibrant and often pastel color palette, reflecting its origins as a digitally produced web comic.

Within the industry, Kokone Nata gained significance as a creator who successfully transitioned from independent social media illustration to a professionally serialized, multi-platform franchise. The manga received recognition early in its run, ranking sixteenth in the Kono Manga ga Sugoi! guidebook for female readers in 2020 and placing seventh in the Pixiv and Nippon Shuppan Hanbai Web Manga General Election in the same year. The rapid development of the property into an anime, a live-action drama, and a novel demonstrates Nata's success in establishing a commercially viable property with broad cross-media appeal.
